Getting junk off your property is only part of the job. What happens to it afterward matters too.
If something is still usable, we try to keep it out of the landfill by finding another use for it whenever practical.
Usable furniture, household goods and other items may be donated or given away when there is a practical opportunity for someone else to use them.
Some material simply cannot be reused. When disposal is necessary, we take the remaining waste to an appropriate disposal facility.
One of the primary disposal facilities we use is the Horn Rapids Landfill in Richland. The facility is owned and operated by the City of Richland and has served the community since it began receiving waste in 1974.
The larger City facility includes the historical landfill, composting operations, a customer transfer station and a newer municipal solid-waste landfill expansion. The newer 104-acre landfill expansion began operating in fall 2020.
Like other municipal solid-waste landfills, Horn Rapids operates within environmental monitoring, permitting and operating requirements intended to protect human health and the environment.
